First part of assessment of European and African food systems completed
SALSA research teams have carried out in-depth assessments of regional food systems across Europe and Africa. The aim of this exercise was to come to a better understanding of the contribution of small farms and small food businesses to a secure and nutritious food supply. A first round of data collection has been completed now covering reference regions in Greece, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and UK in Europe, and Cape Verde, Ghana and Kenya in Africa. In each reference region, data were collected through desk work and by interviewing experts of regional food systems, small-scale farmers and representatives of small food businesses.
Stakeholders representing different food system actors mapped their regional food systems together with researchers and discussed its specific context as well as local particularities. The second and last round of data collection in the remaining 18 reference regions is expected to start in January 2018 and will build on the lessons learnt so far.
